KWEKWE — In one of the largest anti-drug operations in recent years, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have arrested 103 suspects and dismantled 53 drug bases in Kwekwe, dealing a heavy blow to the illegal drug trade in the Midlands province.
The crackdown, which netted more than 60 kilogrammes of marijuana, crystal meth, and bronclear, targeted notorious drug havens in Amaveni, Mbizo, Redcliff, and Torwood. Ten of the suspects are believed to be ringleaders driving the Midlands drug syndicates.
Speaking after the raids, Superintendent Prince Magwizi, Officer Commanding CID Kwekwe/Gokwe District, said drug dealers have adopted increasingly sophisticated smuggling methods.
“They conceal contraband in cooking oil containers, cardboard boxes, or perfume-scented wrapping papers to evade detection. Beating them requires community cooperation, as locals know where the drug lords operate,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner Helena Mahonde, Officer Commanding Crime and Operations for Midlands, warned that the fight has only just begun.
“The President has given us the signal, and the time to act is now. Our teams are all out, and I assure you, this war will be won,” she declared.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, praised the operation, urging other districts to emulate Kwekwe’s success.
“I commend Officer Commanding Kwekwe District Alson Chapeta and his team for dismantling 53 drug bases. These criminals are now behind bars and facing justice,” he said.
