Masvingo – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) continues to shine as a beacon of innovation and industrial development. Today, the university hosted a high-powered delegation from the National Venture Capital Company of Zimbabwe (NVCCZ), marking a key step toward a possible partnership to commercialise research outputs.
The meeting, held at the Herbert Chitepo Law School Boardroom, focused on exploring areas where NVCCZ can support GZU’s efforts to turn ideas from its Innovation Hub and Innovation Centre of Excellence in Dryland Agriculture into viable, market-ready products.
Representing Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo, Professor Talkmore Saungweme, Executive Dean of the Munhumutapa School of Business Sciences, welcomed the delegation. He outlined GZU’s inclusive innovation model, which involves students, staff, and communities in developing solutions that drive national development.
“We follow the national vision that sees universities as key drivers of industrialisation and digital transformation,” said Prof Saungweme. “But to scale, we need partners like NVCCZ who can bring investment and strategic support.”
NVCCZ acknowledged the university’s strong pipeline of ideas and expressed particular interest in GZU’s work in dryland agriculture and digital innovation. The delegation emphasized their mandate to support scalable, impactful projects that address real-world problems.
After the meeting, the delegation toured GZU’s innovation centres, interacting with project teams and gaining insight into ongoing developments.
Both parties agreed to begin formal discussions aimed at establishing a strategic partnership to help bridge the gap between innovation and commercial success. The collaboration is expected to empower local innovators and contribute to Zimbabwe’s vision for an industrialized, innovation-led economy.
