Masvingo – Mucheke Stadium was a sea of jubilation on Sunday as Masvingo United, popularly known as Asipo Haapo or Una Una, secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Deportivo La Murambinda in a thrilling Pacific Storm Eastern Region Division One Soccer League encounter.
The spotlight was firmly on in-form striker Riseup “Malaika” Mtetwa, who dazzled the home crowd with a brace first striking in the 20th minute and sealing the win with another clinical finish in the second half (58th min). Nearly 6,000 passionate supporters roared with delight as their hero delivered yet again.
Despite La Murambinda’s recent surprise triumph over log leaders Tenax FC, they found themselves unable to contain Malaika’s pace and precision.
The victory propelled Masvingo United to second place on the log with 38 points, trailing only FC Hunters, while Tenax who had a bye this weekend remain firmly in the title race.
Beyond Malaika’s brilliance, Una Una’s resurgence is being built on a solid all-round team performance. The defense, anchored by goalkeeper Valentine Chibwana , has conceded just one goal in the last three matches, earning plaudits for discipline and composure. In midfield, stalwarts like Cosmas Ndevo ensured stability and control, keeping the team’s shape intact throughout the contest.
Assistant coach Reason Mugore hailed the team’s determination:
“This was a tough game, but we managed to scoop maximum points. The guys played brilliantly, and I’m proud of their fighting spirit.”
Speaking on behalf of club chairman Advocate Philip Tanaka Shumba, a club representative thanked both the players and the fans:
“The boys are working very hard, and we applaud the supporters for their unwavering spirit. This is a community team, and we urge fans to keep backing it. Special thanks also go to our patron, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, for his consistent support.”
Looking ahead, Una Una face a tough run of fixtures. They travel to Chimanimani to take on Risutso Tigers, followed by a clash with Buffaloes FC in Mutare. They will then return to Mucheke for a home tie against Destiny, before another trip to Mutare to face Mutare City. A highly anticipated local derby against Great Zimbabwe University back at Mucheke promises to cap off an electrifying run.
With their current form, Masvingo United are firmly staking their claim as title contenders, leaving fans hopeful that the club’s long-awaited return to the top flight is within reach.
