Marondera – Mashonaland East has taken bold steps in the fight against drug and substance abuse, raising US$470,000 in a high-profile fundraising campaign held in Marondera this Saturday. The event, initially targeting US$250,000, surpassed expectations, reflecting the province’s determination to combat a crisis threatening the nation’s youth and future.
Minister of Youth and Vocational Training, Hon. Tino Machakaire, described drug abuse as a “pandemic requiring national unity,” urging communities to pool resources in defense of Zimbabwe’s next generation. Local Government Minister Hon. Daniel Garwe echoed the sentiment, calling it a “serious national security issue.”
The campaign was convened by Mashonaland East Minister of State, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, who stressed collective responsibility in addressing the scourge.
Vice President Gen. (Rtd) Dr. Constantino Chiwenga pledged US$30,000, while other senior leaders and corporate partners including Doves Funeral Services CEO Farai Matsika with US$50,000 demonstrated strong support.
The initiative builds on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent national anti-drug fundraising campaign, which secured over US$3 million.
