Masvingo City Council Prioritizes Affordable Housing

masvingo city council prioritizes affordable housing

Masvingo – The Masvingo City Council, through its Department of Housing led by Director Mr. Mandishona, is making commendable strides in providing affordable housing solutions for residents. These efforts are in line with the national agenda to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Central to the council’s housing drive is the focus on social housing for low-income earners. In a major sanitation breakthrough, the council has ensured that every household now has its own toilet replacing the old system where 16 families shared a single block. Additionally, 25 council houses were disposed of to sitting tenants last year, with 40 more expected to be transferred this year.

Mr. Mandishona underscored that the disposal of council houses to long-time occupants is part of a broader empowerment plan. It gives families a sense of ownership and dignity while advancing President Mnangagwa’s vision of “housing for all” by 2030. The council promises a fair and inclusive process, ensuring no deserving resident is left behind.

In tackling the housing backlog, the council is actively engaging private partners. A deal has been concluded with a contractor to service 650 housing stands in Rujeko D, expected to be ready by year-end. Talks are also underway with the Public Service Commission pension fund to construct high-rise student accommodation.

Masvingo City Council’s proactive housing strategy is a critical building block in achieving Vision 2030. Through inclusive planning, infrastructure development, and citizen empowerment, the city is creating a future where every resident has a place to call home decent, affordable, and secure.
