Masvingo – In a strong show of national and local commitment to fighting Zimbabwe’s growing drug and substance abuse crisis, two important initiatives were launched today in Victoria Falls and Masvingo City.
In Victoria Falls, the National Technical Committee on Drug & Substance Abuse conducted a Rapid Assessment & Response (RAR) during the ongoing Disability Expo. The team utilized urine drug testing and structured questionnaires to identify the most commonly abused substances among community members. This scientific approach aims to generate real-time data and strengthen the capacity of local social and health services to provide sustained support beyond the expo.
Back in Masvingo City, a pivotal Drug and Substance Abuse Committee Meeting was held at the Civic Centre Council Hall under the theme,
“Combating Drug and Substance Abuse through Local Leadership and Action.”
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from the health sector, law enforcement, civil society, and local leadership. The objective, as outlined by Sister H. Ncube, was to increase awareness on the prevalence, causes, and impacts of drug abuse in Masvingo, share current health facility interventions, distinguish between rehabilitation centres and psychiatric units, and foster multi-sectoral collaboration.
Sister Mudhovozi highlighted initiatives from Runyararo Clinic, emphasizing community empowerment programs and ongoing efforts in drug education, early detection, and referral. She also gave insight into Masvingo’s drug abuse hotspots, demographic trends, and emerging substances of concern.
In a key session, North West Medical Centre clarified the differences between rehab centres focused on recovery and therapy and psychiatric units, which primarily manage acute mental health crises. This helped break misconceptions and clarified treatment pathways.
Acting Matron Angelina Maredza, in her opening remarks, applauded the city for coming together, saying, “Our strength is in our unity. It’s time to act boldly, to educate, intervene and support our youth and vulnerable members before it’s too late.”
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) presented concerning trends, especially among youth and peri-urban communities. Stakeholders also worked together to identify resource gaps and assess the effectiveness of current response systems including awareness campaigns and treatment options.
Mr. Mapwashike from the National AIDS Council (NAC) gave the closing remarks, calling for an immediate formulation of a Citywide Drug and Substance Abuse Action Plan with defined timelines, responsibilities, and strategies.
