President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for its historic contribution to the liberation of oppressed nations, including Zimbabwe, and its ongoing commitment to international peace and security.

Speaking through Air Marshal Jacob John Nzvede, Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe, during the 2025 Chinese National Army Day commemorations in Harare on Friday, President Mnangagwa acknowledged the PLA’s enduring strength and global impact since its formation on August 1, 1927.

“These commemorations offer a valuable moment to reflect on the resilience and evolution of the People’s Liberation Army, which has grown into a force for peace, stability, and development,” said the President. “The PLA not only played a key role in Zimbabwe’s decolonisation but also remains a pillar of China’s transformation and a global champion for peace.”

Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Zhou Ding, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the PLA’s legacy as a guardian of sovereignty and symbol of patriotism. He also noted the profound significance of this year, marking 80 years since the victory in both China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

“Across 14 years of hardship, China’s brave struggle against fascist aggression made vital contributions to the global victory over tyranny,” Ambassador Zhou said. “This victory is a lasting reminder that unity triumphs over darkness, and justice will always prevail.”

The PLA, born from the historic 1927 Nanchang Uprising, has evolved over 98 years into a people’s army known for sacrifice, loyalty, and resilience. Its legacy continues to shape China’s path while inspiring global cooperation for peace and development.
